Present technologies of multi scale supercomputing in a broad range of problems require specialists with original and creative mindset reinforced by scientific theoretical tools of material science. Such people are able to develop models, perform computations, analyse data and come up with ideas of improvement based on efficiency as dictated by rationale of physical science.

Our program prepares such specialists. This is achieved by learning latest “unfinished” subjects of theoretical physics and practicing scientific research interfaced with supercomputing and emerging quantum computing. During four semesters of studies, students get hands onto parallel computing methods for scientific applications, computational optimization approaches and artificial intelligence as compulsory courses.

The starting date is flexible between Summer and Fall of Entry requirements: Master degree in Physics or Mathematics with strong background in Theoretical.

This timeline lists significant discoveries in physics and the laws of nature, including experimental discoveries, theoretical proposals that were confirmed experimentally, and theories that have significantly influenced current thinking in modern physics. Such discoveries are often a multi-step, multi-person process. Multiple discovery sometimes occurs when multiple research groups discover the same phenomenon at about the same time, and scientific priority is often disputed.

The listings below include some of the most significant people and ideas by date of publication or experiment. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theoretical Physicist

A physicist is a scientist who specializes in the field of physics , which encompasses the interactions of matter and energy at all length and time scales in the physical universe. Physicists work across a wide range of research fields , spanning all length scales: from sub-atomic and particle physics , through biological physics , to cosmological length scales encompassing the universe as a whole.

The field generally includes two types of physicists: experimental physicists who specialize in the observation of physical phenomena and the analysis of experiments, and theoretical physicists who specialize in mathematical modeling of physical systems to rationalize, explain and predict natural phenomena. The study and practice of physics is based on an intellectual ladder of discoveries and insights from ancient times to the present.

Many mathematical and physical ideas used today found their earliest expression in the work of ancient civilizations, such as the Babylonian astronomers and Egyptian engineers , the Phoenician scholar Thales of Miletus , Euclid in Ptolemaic Egypt , and the Greek writers Archimedes and Aristarchus.

It covers the following main areas: quantum field theory, particle physics and string theory; theoretical condensed matter physics,; theoretical astrophysics, plasma.

There are a lot of stories out there of people who explain how they became data scientists but I found it hard when I did the transition to find one that corresponded to my profile. This is why I want to share my journey just in case it could inspire someone else going through the same thing. I will describe my journey as an example but this is not meant to be taken as advice. I am not an expert in finding a job. During these degrees, I mostly learned advanced mathematics and how to solve problems using them.

I mostly did theoretical work but I did a little bit of scientific programming. I also got involved quite a bit in organizing weekly talks and reading courses, visits to primary schools to do science activities with the kids and volunteering for conferences and events. Towards the end of my PhD I started to look into what kind of jobs I could get with my degree. I have to tell you that a job directly involving theoretical physics is very hard to find.

Most of them are in universities and they require at least one postdoc so I ruled them out.

Coronavirus: information for prospective students. The Masters in Theoretical Physics provides an understanding of the principles and methods of modern physics, with particular emphasis on the theoretical aspects of the subject, and at a level appropriate for a professional physicist. Modes of delivery of the MSc in Theoretical Physics include lectures, seminars and tutorials and allow students the opportunity to take part in lab, project and team work.

The programme draws upon a wide range of advanced Masters-level courses. You will have the flexibility to tailor your choice of optional lecture courses and project work to a wide variety of specific research topics and their applications in the area of theoretical physics. Both his parents were physicists his Italian mother met her Dutch husband at a summer school in the United States. He studied physics at Leiden University, earning a Ph. He returned to Leiden University in as professor of theoretical physics at the Lorentz Institute, a chair he holds to this date. His marriage in has been blessed with four children and six grandchildren. In , while at Philips Research, Carlo Beenakker contributed to the discovery and explanation of conductance quantization in a quantum point contact, for which he shared the Royal Dutch Shell prize with his colleagues Henk van Houten and Bart van Wees.

Carlo Beenakker has worked on a great variety of topics involving the electronic properties on the nanoscale, first dealing with conventional electrons in semiconductor two-dimensional electron gases, then with massless Dirac fermions in graphene and topological insulators, and more recently with Majorana fermions in superconductors. He also made a substantial contribution to establishing the basic concepts of single-electron tunnelling, the Coulomb Blockade and noise in mesoscopic systems, and the transport theory of the Quantum Hall effect.

He developed the theory of random matrices, originating from nuclear physics, into a powerful and versatile tool for the study of quantum transport. His recent research focuses on ways in which Majorana modes can be used for topological quantum computations, in close collaboration with the QuTech laboratory in Delft. He is an outstanding speaker and is frequently invited to attend international conferences and give plenary talks.

He is known also as an inspiring teacher and supervisor of PhD students and postdocs that attracts highly talented young people, including those from Ukraine, to his research group. In he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the National academy of sciences Ukraine. The main character, Sheldon Jim Parsons , is a theoretical physicist. He is exceptionally intelligent, but also socially unconventional, egocentric, envious and ultra-competitive. His best friend, Leonard Johnny Galecki , is an experimental physicist who, although more balanced, also shows more fluency with quantum physics than with ordinary social situations. Their steadfast friends are an aerospace engineer and an astrophysicist. The story revolves around the contrast between their intellect; obsession with comic books, video games, science fiction and fantasy; and struggles with the basics of human interactions, including those with their female counterparts.

Science, especially physics, is a recurring theme in the show and the scientific authenticity and contemporaneity are noteworthy.

This course is ideally suited to those with a specific interest in mathematics and its application , and places less emphasis on experimental work than our standard Physics courses. As a Theoretical Physics student, you will take an extra mathematics module in both years in place of a physics module. This core programme provides you with a good grounding in physics, mathematics and experimental methods, and prepares you for advanced study.

As the degree progresses you will have greater flexibility to specialise, with a wide choice of theoretical optional modules in areas such as group theory, general relativity and quantum field theory. You will also have the opportunity to build on the BSc course with an additional year of Master’s level study , and the chance to complete a substantial project on a theoretical physics topic in one of our research groups.
