Raising young children can seem like one of the toughest tasks in the world and just when you think you might have it figured out, they go and turn into tweens. The tween stage is around the ages of 9 – 12, when they’re no longer a small child and they’re not quite a teenager yet. Basically, it’s this very complicated phase of being in between two different specific age groups and all of the growth spurts and highs and lows of emotions and hormones that go along with that, reflect just that.
For a lot of parents out there, deciding when you’re okay with the age in which your tween or teen should be allowed to explore the world of dating is completely subjective, as some people will think it’s alright to start a little earlier, and some parents are just more comfortable with their child waiting until later in the teen years. Think back to who you were as a child in the age range of 9 – 12 years old. Some kids in that age bracket are still into playtime and might act out to get attention or maybe they still love their Barbies because they’re so pretty and perfect looking and they have yet to really discern what qualities or traits actually make up to define an authentic and decent human being.
For a lot of tweens out there, they’re not likely to want to date someone because they enjoy their personality and like them because they’re a kind, smart and generous person. Which, as a parent, you would likely want your child to look far beyond any of those superficial things and look at the person, but a lot of tweens just aren’t there yet. Even though you might feel as though your tween perhaps doesn’t have the emotional maturity at this point to seriously date, it doesn’t mean that they won’t have questions or desires about potential romantic interests or crushes.

This can be the ideal time to really dive into these areas with your tween and answer any of the complicated questions that they might have.
Also, don’t be afraid to take them along what your dating journey was like in your teens. Discuss all of the warm and fuzzy stuff, but more serious matters like domestic violence and consent are topics that people should not just gloss over or hope that they’re child will learn “via observation”.
