Below are three excerpts from volume two of Jesus of Nazareth. They are presented at length, entire sections lifted from the chapters of the full book. The account of the washing of the feet presents us with two different human responses to this gift, exemplified by Judas and Peter. Immediately after the exhortation to follow his example, Jesus begins to speak of Judas. John tells us in this regard that Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified: “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me” John speaks three times of Jesus’ being “troubled”: beside the grave of Lazarus , 38 , on “Palm Sunday” after the saying about the dying grain of wheat in a scene reminiscent of Gethsemane —27 , and finally here.

Sepphoris was a major ancient city located in lower Galilee, in what is today Israel. Most prominent in the Roman era, the city was located about 6 km from Nazareth. Sepphoris became an important commercial and political center in the first century CE, and likely due to this affluent economic status, its residents did not actively take part in the Jewish rebellion that took place from 66 to 70 CE.
Ultimately, Sepphoris fell into decline during the Islamic era. In the twentieth century, largely due to its proximity to Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus, the site attracted the attention of biblical scholars and archaeologists, and many excavations have taken place over the last several decades. Although never actually mentioned in the Bible, scholars have long sought to uncover any possible links that may exist between this ancient city and Jesus.
In addition, ancient historians have maintained an interest in Sepphoris because of its prominent status in the Roman world. Skip to main content Skip to table of contents.

In the s, a mysterious marble tablet held at the Louvre in Paris started catching the attention of religious scholars. The nature of the so-called Nazareth Inscription has been hotly debated in the decades since. Others, however, were more skeptical of the link, pointing out that the variant of Greek inscribed on the tablet was rare outside of Greece and Turkey and would have therefore been out of place in Nazareth, a city in the Middle East.
These findings make it highly unlikely the tablet was inscribed in Nazareth, Bodel tells Science. In response to the ensuing scandal, the first Roman emperor, Augustus, may have ordered this tablet, and perhaps others, created to re-establish order in the eastern Mediterranean. Augustus may have had additional reasons to issue such an edict. Comparing the text to other inscriptions with known roots in Kos and Nazareth could be a logical next step, he says.
By way of trade, rocks from Kos could have also made their way to Nazareth. A more unsavory scenario might exist as well: that the tablet was inscribed by a well-informed forger in the 19th century, just before it was acquired by a French collector named Wilhelm Froehner in , archaeologist Robert Tykot of the University of South Florida tells Science News. Several authors have advanced a particular inscription as early evidence of the empty tomb story in the Gospels. I will not attempt to trace all uses of this argument I have encountered several , but I will note the two most important examples: it was used most recently by Norman Geisler and Ron Brooks [ 1 ] and most popularly by Josh McDowell [ 2 ]. I will quote McDowell in full:. Michael Green [ Man Alive , , p.
This piece of evidence “is called the Nazareth Inscription, after the town where it was found. It is an imperial edict, belonging either to the reign of Tiberius A. And it is an invective, backed with heavy sanctions, against meddling around with tombs and graves! It looks very much as if the news of the empty tomb had got back to Rome in a garbled form Pilate would have had to report: and he would obviously have said that the tomb had been rifled.
This edict, it seems, is the imperial reaction.
